September 2026

Can you commit to not driving for the week, or even just a day?

Whether we live in suburban towns or city neighborhoods, everyone in Allegheny County deserves safe, reliable, dignified access to the places we need to go. Across the county, 30% of our friends and neighbors don’t drive a car. The Week Without Driving (Oct. 1-8) is a nationwide movement that highlights the challenges non-drivers face in our region and calls for improvements to our sidewalks, roads and transportation system as a whole.

As part of WWOD, we’re partnering with POGOH and Access Mob Pittsburgh for a fun, free Adaptive Cycling session on the North Shore!

We’ll be at Allegheny Landing on Sunday, October 4 from 1-4pm. Anyone and everyone, regardless of disability status or experience level in cycling is invited to try adaptive bicycles, tricycles and more. Register online to tell us you’re coming.

There’s a full lineup of WWOD events across the city. We hope to see you there!

Hey, Hazelwood… Picture This arrives in your neighborhood

We’re falling into our fall schedule with a new spot for our pop-up exhibit! After a few weeks in the Mon Valley, you can now find our community photos tucked alongside books at the Carnegie Library Hazelwood Branch. Stop by through October 20 to explore photos and audio stories highlighting the power of intergenerational connection in our communities.

And save the date! We’ll be hosting a community Listening Session on October 10 from 1-2pm. We want to hear from you about your perspectives on aging and what makes Hazelwood a good community to grow up and grow older. RSVP to save your spot!

Age-Friendly welcomes students back to campus at Penn State Greater Allegheny

Our fall Listening Tour made a special college stop to talk with students about how they picture aging and how they view growing older in their communities. Regional Chancellor Dr. Megan L. Nagel kicked off the session for students to candidly share their perspectives on aging, caregiving roles and how their neighborhoods could better support people of all ages. They also got a tour of our Picture This Pop-Up Exhibition and heard audio stories from local McKeesport neighbors. Thank you to Dr. Nagel and the students and team at PSUGA!

New Medicaid requirements go into effect January 2027

Beginning in 2027, many current Medicaid recipients will need to document that they meet new work, school, or volunteer requirements, or will risk losing their coverage. Finding and accessing the right paperwork and requirement needs is the key step is helping enrolled adults continue their coverage.

HealthChoices is the name of Pennsylvania’s managed care programs for Medicaid/Medical Assistance recipients. Starting January 1, 2027, there are major changes coming:

  1. Some adults ages 19-64 will need to have their Medicaid eligibility checked by completing a renewal every 6 months instead of 1 year.
  2. Some adults ages 19-64 who do not have a dependent child under 14 years old must show that they are meeting work requirements.
  3. Retroactive Medicaid coverage timeframes will decrease for Medicaid applicants.

Make a plan to keep your coverage, and find more information at the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Medicaid learning page.
