Our Mission
Our mission is to bring generations together to reimagine how our neighborhoods are built, and to advance equity through advocacy, education and innovation.
Our Story
Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. Currently, the WHO Global Network includes 1,700+ communities in 60 countries, covering over 330 million people worldwide. In the United States, AARP Livable Communities leads designation and coordination efforts among the 900+ communities that have signed on as members.
We were among the early adopters when Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging (SWPPA) inspired Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh to join the network in September 2015. We completed our first Action Plan cycle—a five-year process of planning, implementation and evaluation—in 2020, and are currently in our second five-year cycle, 2020-2025. Over the years, we’ve built a network of 120+ community partners, working both in and outside of aging.
We have a collaborative structure with SWPPA, our founder and fiscal sponsor, and University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, our research partner. The initiative is funded by the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, the Jefferson Regional Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation and the Heinz Family Foundation, with initial support from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, the Mary Hillman Jennings Foundation and SWPPA. We are also proud to partner on federally-funded projects with a variety of partners including the Allegheny County DHS Area Agency on Aging and Allegheny County Health Department.
