About Us

Our Mission

Our mission is to bring generations together to reimagine how our neighborhoods are built, and to advance equity through advocacy, education and innovation.

Our Story

Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. Currently, the WHO Global Network includes 1,445 communities in 51 countries, covering over 300 million people worldwide. In the United States, AARP Livable Communities leads designation and coordination efforts. Currently, nearly 800 communities have signed on as members.

We were among the early adopters when Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging (SWPPA) inspired Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh to join the network in September 2015. This kicked off a five-year planning, implementation and evaluation cycle. We completed our first Action Plan cycle in 2020, and are currently in our second five-year cycle, 2020-2025, with a network of over 120+ community partners, working both in and outside of aging.

We now have a collaborative structure with SWPPA and University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, which serves as our research partner.

The initiative is made possible through generous funding from the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, the Jefferson Regional Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation and the Heinz Family Foundation, with initial support from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, the Mary Hillman Jennings Foundation and founding partner SWPPA.
